A Typical Day at Polowen
Every day at Polowen is carefully planned to provide a balance of learning, routines, wellbeing and opportunities to develop independence.
Whilst no two days are exactly the same, our timetable balances academic learning, communication development, independence skills and wellbeing.
Throughout the day, communication is supported using our Total Communication approach, ensuring all learners can access learning and express themselves effectively.
Tutor time
The school day begins with a tutor session, giving learners time to arrive, settle into school, regulate their emotions and prepare for learning.
Morning sessions
Morning sessions focus on core learning, including English and Mathematics. Daily reading, phonics and communication activities help learners develop their literacy skills, while mathematics lessons build confidence in applying number and problem-solving skills in meaningful contexts.
Afternoon sessions
Afternoons provide opportunities to access a broad and engaging curriculum, which may include Science, Art, Music, Physical Education, Cooking, Humanities, ICT and personalised learning.
Breaks and lunch time
Learners have regular sensory and movement breaks throughout the day. These planned opportunities support concentration, emotional regulation and readiness for learning.
Break and lunch times are an important part of the school day. Learners are supported to develop communication, friendships, independence and social skills through structured and unstructured opportunities, both indoors and outdoors.
End of school day
At the end of each day, learners take part in a review session where they celebrate successes, reflect on their achievements and prepare for the transition home.
Our daily routines are flexible enough to respond to individual needs whilst providing the structure and support that help learners feel safe, confident and ready to learn.
