Two Poltair students have experienced success with the St. Austell Sharks swimming club. Talan Annear in Year 10 has been swimming with the club for 5 years and his specialist event is front crawl at either 50 or 100 metres. In the recent County Championships Talan was placed 2nd and gained a Silver medal. 'I like setting myself a new challenge' said Talan and my ambition is to improve on my personal best time of 1 minute 4 seconds to reach the 1 minute 3 second qualifying time for the district championships.' Talan's determination is played out during his 5 weekly training sessions including evenings, weekends and early mornings.
Meanwhile Year 11 student Harry Eade has been a member of the Sharks for 7 years and competes in both swimming and water polo events. His specialist event is backstroke at 200 metres and he recently won a silver trophy at the county championships for under 16s. In water polo the Sharks team were up against some tough competition in the South West championships under 17s event in Cheltenham but Harry and his team still gained 5th out of 10 teams. Harry explained' Because my ambition is to play and compete at a higher level I know I will have to carry on training hard. When it comes to applying for university I will take into account those that have a good reputation for swimming and water polo teams in the area.'
