Maths
Maths is a core subject, studied by all pupils. Lessons are planned to include mental, practical and written activities. Pupils are given opportunities to solve problems with and without the use of calculators. They have access to the ICT suites and are encouraged to use computers when appropriate.
Sets are arranged according to ability, ensuring pupils get the support they need to fulfil their potential. Pupils’ achievements are reviewed regularly and adjustments made to the sets as appropriate.
The department has an ‘Open door’ policy but also runs regular revision and self-help groups, catering for all abilities. Other extra curricula activities include classes and challenges organised by local colleges and Universities.
KS3 pupils follow a course based on the National strategy which includes work on Number, Shape and Measures, Data Handling and the application of these skills. This concludes in year 9 with the SATs in May of the summer term. Pupils then start working towards their GCSE.
At KS4 the department policy is to enter all pupils for GCSE Maths whilst also providing the opportunity for some pupils to gain an Entry Level Certificate. Pupils follow the AQA Mathematics B Modular course (3302) which consists of 5 components, two coursework and 3 written exams. Pupils sit two modules in year 10 and the final exam in year 11.
Dates for these exams:
Year 10 Module 1 – Number March
Year 10 Module 3 – Data Handling June
Year 11 Module 5 – Algebra and Shape June
The main texts used by the department are:
KS3 Key Maths – Nelson Thornes
KS4 Mathematics for AQA GCSE (Modular)
Useful revision texts and workbooks have been published for both Key Stages by CGP.
These books may be ordered through any good bookshop.
Pupils use a variety of equipment during their course of study. Whilst the department will provide that which is needed only occasionally eg. Protractors and compasses, certain basic equipment, pen, pencil and ruler are needed most lessons and we ask that pupils come prepared with this. A scientific calculator is advisablefor those at level 5 and above otherwise a basic calculator will be fine.
