Thirst Quenchers
What is sustainability?
Sustainability is living today in a way that doesn't harm the environment so that people in the future are able to live in the world in the way that we have done. A good way of showing this is to think of a 3-legged stool.
For a 3-legged stool to stand up, it needs all three legs. For example, if you make a drink that uses local products and is reasonably priced but tastes horrible, you will not achieve sustainability. But if you made a drink that has low food miles, environmentally friendly packaging, tastes good and is reasonably priced, you will have a sustainable product.
In making your drink you are going to need to achieve three main objectives:
- It must be a drink that people will like
- It must be sold at a price that would make money
- It must do as little damage to the environment as possible.

Which of these is the sustainable drink?
- Low food miles, reasonably priced, tastes good, environmentally damaging packaging.
- Fruit from across the globe, expensive to buy, tastes awful, environmentally friendly packaging.
- Low food miles, reasonably priced, tastes good, environmentally friendly packaging.
