Welcome To Poltair Green Team!
Poltair Green Team was born out of the Energy and Environment Enterprise Day organised for Year 9 by Science Teacher Luke Martin.
The Green Team meet after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays in S3.
Some of the activities that we have taken part in so far include:
- Re-establishing an overgrown and vandalised garden area;
- Creating a new wildlife pond and clearing out our other school pond;
- Sowing and growing (using organic gardening methods and pest control) then eating our own fruit and vegetables;
- Planting saplings and creating better wildlife habitats within our school grounds;
- Collecting seeds from native plants around our school and the St Austell area then growing them under glass until they can be planted-out;
- Reducing waste within our school by collecting and composting uncooked food and vegetable peelings from the canteen and food technology rooms;
- Harvesting rainwater to use for watering plants and maintaining water levels in our ponds;
- Providing new facilities to recycle materials - such as paper collection boxes in EVERY room in our school;
- Setting up a solar panel, battery storage and inverter system to provide mains power to our Green Team base;
- Reusing a wide variety of scrap materials for student-led building projects like Compost bins, bird tables, hedgehog nesting boxes and irrigation systems.
